Your thumbnail and title decide whether someone clicks. Getting the technical details right is easy, and a few design rules make a big difference.
YouTube thumbnail specifications
- Size: 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9). Minimum width is 640 pixels
- File size: under 2 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG or GIF (WebP is not accepted for thumbnails)
- Safe area: keep key content away from the bottom-right corner, where the duration label appears
Resize any picture to the right size
- Open the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer.
- Drop in your image.
- Keep 1280 x 720 selected and choose Crop to fill or Fit inside.
- Download. The tool compresses the file automatically to stay under 2 MB.
Already have a tall photo? The 16:9 aspect ratio tool can add a blurred background instead of cropping.
Design rules that work
- One clear focus. A face with a strong expression, or one striking object.
- Big, short text. Three to five words, readable at a tiny size on a phone. Add the text with an outline so it never gets lost.
- High contrast. Bright subject, simpler, darker or blurred background.
- Consistent style. Use the same fonts and colours so your channel is recognizable.
- Do not repeat the title. Add curiosity rather than duplicating it.
Cut yourself out of the background
Removing the background lets you place yourself on a bold colour or scene. Use the Background Remover, then add a soft shadow so the cut-out sits naturally.
Make sure it looks good small
Most views happen on a phone, where the thumbnail is about 2 inches wide. View your design at 25 percent size before uploading. If you cannot read it, simplify.
Keep the file light
If your thumbnail is over 2 MB, run it through the Image Compressor and choose JPG at around 85 percent quality.
Channel art and icon
- Channel banner: 2560 x 1440 pixels
- Channel icon: 800 x 800 pixels (shown as a circle). Use Circle Crop to preview.
Test and improve
YouTube Studio lets you test thumbnails on some channels. Even without it, compare click-through rates after changes and keep what works.
Design for a tiny size
Most viewers see your thumbnail at a few centimetres wide on a phone. If it is not readable at that size, it will not get clicked.
- Use 3 to 5 words at most, in a big, bold font.
- One clear subject: a face with a strong expression often works well.
- High contrast: bright subject, simple background.
- Keep text away from the bottom right, where the video length badge appears.
The technical specs
Use 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9), JPG, PNG or GIF format, and a file under 2 MB. Make a thumbnail, then check it at small size before you upload. Use the YouTube thumbnail resizer to get the right size and ratio.
Build it step by step
- Pick a sharp frame from your video.
- Remove the background to separate the subject if you want a bold look.
- Add headline text with add text to image.
- Export and shrink it with the image compressor if it is over 2 MB.
Test and improve
Try two versions across different videos and compare click-through rate in YouTube Studio. Keep the style consistent so viewers recognise your channel.
Frequently asked questions
What file types does YouTube accept for thumbnails?
JPG, PNG and GIF. WebP is not accepted, and the file must be under 2 MB.
Why is my thumbnail blurry?
Uploading below 1280 x 720 or a heavily compressed image makes thumbnails look soft. Use the full size and keep quality around 85 percent or higher.
Where should I put text on a thumbnail?
Keep text large and short, and away from the bottom-right corner where the video duration badge sits.
Can I make a thumbnail from a portrait photo?
Yes. Crop it to 16:9 or add a blurred background so the picture fits without stretching.
