What Is Aspect Ratio? Common Aspect Ratios Explained

Aspect ratio sounds technical, but it is simply the shape of a picture or screen: how wide it is compared with how tall. Understanding it stops you from stretching photos or getting black bars in videos.

What is aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportion between width and height, written as two numbers separated by a colon. An image 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall has a ratio of 1920:1080, which simplifies to 16:9. The ratio does not depend on the size: a 1280 x 720 picture is also 16:9.

How to calculate it

Divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor. For 1600 x 1200, the divisor is 400, so the ratio is 4:3. Or type the numbers into the Aspect Ratio Calculator and read the result, plus the matching height for any new width.

To find the height for a new width: new height = new width x original height / original width.

Common aspect ratios and where they are used

Ratio Name Typical use
1:1 Square Instagram posts, profile pictures
4:3 Standard Older TVs, iPads, many compact cameras
3:2 Classic photo DSLR photos, 35 mm film
16:9 Widescreen YouTube, TVs, laptop screens
21:9 Ultrawide Cinematic video, ultrawide monitors
4:5 Portrait Instagram portrait posts
9:16 Vertical Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts

Why aspect ratio matters

  • Stretching: forcing a picture into a different ratio makes people look wide or thin.
  • Cropping: platforms crop to their preferred ratio and may cut off the important part.
  • Black bars: a 4:3 video on a 16:9 screen shows bars at the sides (pillarboxing).

Change the aspect ratio without stretching

There are two honest ways to change shape:

  1. Crop away part of the picture. Good when the edges are not important.
  2. Add background around the picture. Good when you must keep everything. A blurred copy of the image as the background looks professional.

The Aspect Ratio Changer does both and works in bulk. There are shortcuts for the most common targets:

Finding the ratio of existing pictures

Drop them into the Image Aspect Ratio Finder to see width, height and ratio for many files at once.

Aspect ratio vs resolution

Resolution is how many pixels there are. Aspect ratio is their shape. You can have a low-resolution 16:9 image and a high-resolution 16:9 image. When you resize, keep the ratio locked to avoid distortion.

How to calculate it

Divide the width by the height and simplify. A picture 1920 x 1080 reduces to 16:9. A phone screenshot of 1170 x 2532 is about 9:19.5. The aspect ratio calculator does this instantly and also finds a missing width or height when you lock the ratio.

Where each ratio is used

Ratio Common use
1:1 Square social posts, avatars
4:5 Portrait feed posts
3:2 Most DSLR and mirrorless photos, 6 x 4 inch prints
4:3 Compact cameras, tablets, older monitors
16:9 Video, YouTube, widescreen displays
9:16 Stories, Reels and vertical video

Changing ratio without distortion

Never stretch an image to fit. You have two honest choices: crop away the extra, or add padding around the picture. The aspect ratio changer offers both, and you can also go straight to 16:9 or crop freely with crop image online.

Prints and frames

Print sizes follow ratios too. A 3:2 photo does not fit an 8 x 10 frame (5:4) without cropping, so decide where to crop before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?

Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. For example 1920 x 1080 simplifies to 16:9.

What is the aspect ratio of a phone photo?

Most phone cameras shoot 4:3 by default and many can switch to 16:9 or 1:1. Social stories use 9:16.

How do I change aspect ratio without stretching?

Crop the picture to the new shape or add a background around it so the original proportions are kept.

Is aspect ratio the same as resolution?

No. Resolution is the number of pixels. Aspect ratio is the shape. Two images can share a ratio but differ widely in resolution.
